A Cumberland County man died Tuesday afternoon when the tractor-trailer he was driving east on Interstate 40 in Johnston County crashed through a median guardrail, overturned and wound up in a ditch on the westbound side, state troopers said.
The crash happened near the Interstate 95 interchange about 2:15 p.m., the State Highway Patrol said.
Steve Allen Williams, 47, of Wade was driving the rig, loaded with concrete blocks, troopers said. He was wearing a seat belt and was found in the upside down tractor, which was partially submerged in water in the ditch, they said.
The truck was in the right lane of I-40, went across the left lane and through the guardrail and across both westbound lanes, troopers said.
The cause of the accident remained under investigation Wednesday.
