A Raleigh man died in Pender County when his stopped car was hit by another vehicle on Interstate 40 County before dawn Monday, the State Highway Patrol said.
The highway patrol said James A. Joyner, 92, was driving the 2005 Buick LeSabre that was in a travel lane on the eastbound side of the interstate.
A little before 4 a.m., a Jeep Liberty driven by a woman from Burgaw, Jamie Tavcic, hit the Buick and rolled over, troopers said.
Tavcic was out of her Jeep and checking on Joyner when a pickup hit her vehicle.
Tavcic had minor injuries, and the pickup driver was unhurt, troopers said.
Investigators were trying to determine why Joyner’s car was stopped.
WNCN reported that Raleigh police nearly issued a state Silver Alert for Joyner when the wreck happened.
