Seven railroad crossings will be closed at some point in Cary next week while CSX makes repairs, and town officials are urging people to avoid them if possible.
Five of the crossings – North Academy Street, North Harrison Avenue, North Dixon Street, Old Apex Road and High House Road – will be closed on a rolling basis beginning 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, through Thursday. The other two – Southwest Maynard and Laura Duncan roads – will be closed starting at 11 p.m. on Jan. 18 through the following evening. Poor weather could force the railroad to postpone the work.
“Understanding the vital role these streets play for our business owners and residents, we have requested that CSX work to reopen each crossing as quickly as possible to minimize the number of simultaneous closings.” Robert Shultes, the town’s transportation engineer, said in a statement.
Town officials warn of congestion where the crossings are closed and urge people to follow detour signs or seek alternative routes, such as Cary Parkway. They will use the town’s traffic twitter feed, @TOC_Traffic, and the Waze app to update the status of the crossings until the work is complete.
