A motorcyclist was killed on Interstate 540 Monday afternoon when a car ran across the median into the path of the bike, according to the State Highway Patrol.
Philip James Sabino of Cahill Road in Raleigh was killed in the crash that happened about 4:30 p.m. on I-540 near Aviation Drive, backing traffic up on I-40, Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Jeff Gordon.
Witnesses said a Honda driven by Kanak Singh, 28, of Neches Lane in Raleigh was traveling west on I-540 when it traveled into the median, crashed through the guard wire and bounded into the eastbound lanes, colliding with the motorcycle.
Sabino, 44, was thrown from his motorcycle and died at the scene, Gordon said.
Investigators had not determined by late Monday what caused the driver to veer into the median, but they say alcohol and speed were not factors.
State troopers will consult with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office about possible charges after completing their investigation, Gordon said.
