One killed, one badly hurt in Durham road crashes

A man from Henderson died in a two-vehicle crash on Hillsborough Road on Tuesday afternoon and a Durham man was critically hurt in a motorcycle-van crash on North Roxboro Street 90 minutes later, police said.

Michael William Vandall, 59, of Henderson was driving a Toyota Camry toward the U.S. 15-501 interchange on Hillsborough Road when it hit the back of a Ford F-150 pickup that was stopped at a red light, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

The accident happened about 3:30 and closed Hillsborough Road for about three hours, Michael said.

About 5 p.m., Jordan Appel, 21, of Durham was critically injured when a van pulled from a business into northbound North Roxboro Street and bumped Appel’s Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle, which was going north in the 5200 block.

The motorcycle went across the southbound lanes and was hit in the far-right lane there by a Toyota RAV 4.

Ryan Doherty, 39, of Durham was driving the van, police said, and Karen Rodenhizer, 59, of Durham was behind the wheel of the RAV 4.

No charges were filed Tuesday, Michael said, and the crash was still being investigated.
