A 38-year-old woman died early Friday when she was struck by a pickup truck while crossing the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 in the state’s Fortify road-widening construction zone in Raleigh, police said.
Annmarie Elizabeth Perna of Raleigh was on foot after her sedan became disabled, according to police.
Police said Perna was struck by a 2010 Toyota pickup driven by Shawn Lyndell Price, 45, of Roanoke Rapids. Price was not injured.
The accident happened between the South Saunders Street and Lake Wheeler Road exits shortly before 2 a.m., police said. Perna’s disabled car was on the westbound side of the road, and it’s not known why she was crossing the highway when she was hit, said police spokesman Jim Sughrue.

A man who called 911 shortly after the accident said Perna was lying motionless in the center lane and that the front end of the pickup truck was badly damaged. “The whole front end is just smashed,” he said.
No charges have been filed. Police were still investigating the accident Friday.
