A 52-year-old woman was killed when she drove her SUV around a set of railroad crossing arms near Pinebluff and was hit by an Amtrak train Thursday morning, according to the State Highway Patrol.
Aliksa Mongkeya of Aberdeen was hit at the crossing on Pinebluff Lake Road just east of Pinebluff at about 6:45 a.m. Highway Patrol investigators say the railroad warning signals were operating properly when Mongkeya drove her Chevrolet Tahoe around the crossing arms and was hit.
Amtrak’s Silver Star, which runs between Miami, Fla., and New York City, was heading north toward Southern Pines and Raleigh when the accident occurred. No one on board the train was injured, but the locomotive was damaged and could not continue, said Amtrak spokesman Mike Tolbert. Buses were brought in to take the train’s 82 passengers to their destinations, Tolbert said.
