This view from a state Department of Transportation camera shows the Interstate 40 backup caused Friday morning when an accident shut down one of the road’s two westbound lanes.

Traffic on westbound Interstate 40 backed up Friday morning after a wreck closed one of the two lanes between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.

The crash happened shortly after 9 a.m., and firefighters and medical personnel needed the left lane closed while they worked, the state Department of Transportation said.

The accident was between the New Hope Church Road interchange and N.C. 86 in Chapel Hill.

Officials said they hoped to have both lanes open within an hour, but backups were expected to linger after that.

No details were immediately available on the extent of injuries or damage.
