Police have charged the driver of a pickup truck with intentionally hitting another man on Poole Road on Tuesday morning, then driving off.
Jared James Lemm, 32, later turned himself in and was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and felony hit and run, police said. The incident “stemmed from preexisting personal circumstances” between Lemm and the man he’s accused of hitting, Bruce Thompson, 44, of Garner, rather than a case of “road rage.”
Thompson was severely injured but was awake and breathing, according to a witness who called 911.
Police think Lemm was driving a pickup truck that rear-ended Thompson’s pickup near the Interstate 440 interchange at about 8:15 a.m. The witness who called 911 said that after Thompson got out, the driver of the other pickup blew his horn, bumped into Thompson then “hit the gas and just went completely over him.”

The witness, a woman whose name was not released, said Thompson was hit by a large, black Chevrolet pickup truck that then turned on to I-440 headed toward I-40. By early afternoon, police had described the incident as an assault that was not a random act, suggesting Thompson and the person who hit him knew each other.
