Wrong-way crash on I-440 in Raleigh claims lives of two men

From staff reports

Two men died Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle accident caused by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 440 near New Bern Avenue, police said.

Jesus Leon Galera, 34, and Alejandro Mendez Gonzalez, 21, were declared dead at the scene after the 1:40 a.m. wreck, police reported.

They said Galera was driving a Ford sedan east in the westbound side of the interstate when it smashed into a Honda sedan that Gonzalez was driving.

Both men were alone in their cars.

The westbound lanes of Interstate 440 between New Bern Avenue and Brentwood Road where the accident occurred were closed for several hours, and police said their investigation was continuing Tuesday.
