Police have charged the driver of a car that collided with a GoRaleigh bus Monday morning, shutting down McDowell and Edenton streets in downtown Raleigh for several hours and sending several people to WakeMed Raleigh hospital.
Joseph Mederious Craveiro, 63, was charged with felony hit and run, misdemeanor hit and run, driving with license revoked, failing to stop at a red light and DWI.
Police say Craveiro was headed north on McDowell at about 9:20 a.m. when he hit an SUV at Morgan Street and kept going. No one in the SUV was injured, said police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan.
Two blocks later, Craveiro ran a red light and hit the bus, sending it into a building at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, Hourigan said. Fourteen people on the bus were taken to the hospital, but none of them were seriously injured, she said.
Craveiro left the scene of the accident on foot but did not get far before he was arrested, Hourigan said.
The collision knocked down power poles and traffic lights, forcing police to close the intersection and snarling traffic. The streets were not re-opened until about 3 p.m.
