A state trooper charged an off-duty Raleigh police officer with driving while impaired Tuesday evening after a breath test showed the officer's alcohol level was 0.17, more than twice the legal limit for driving.
Senior Officer T.D. Hurst, 29, of Tortuga Street in Rolesville was driving on N.C. 96 near the intersection of Jack Jones Road when his 2002 Toyota truck was involved in an accident, according to the citation that Trooper S.L. Moy issued to Hurst.
About 6:30 p.m., Moy said he smelled alcohol on Hurst’s breath, and Hurst agreed to a breath test that Moy administered about 8:30 p.m., records showed.
The citation indicates two people were injured in the accident and two vehicles were damaged. The highway patrol said the injuries were believed to be minor, but details were not immediately available.
A Wake County magistrate released Hurst on a written promise to appear in court on April 5.
Raleigh police said Hurst joined the force in November 2006 and is assigned to the department’s Field Operations Division.
His duty status with the department was not disclosed Wednesday.
