Interstate 40 was closed in both directions at Rock Quarry Road for more than an hour Tuesday afternoon after police responded to a call about a suspicious person on the bridge over the interstate.

Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said someone called police at 3:23 p.m. to report a teen on the bridge. Police were able to talk a 16-year-old girl off the bridge at about 4:45 p.m.

In a release, police said she was “unharmed and being evaluated.”

The shutdown backed up traffic for miles in both directions. Westbound traffic on I-40 was being diverted onto the I-440 Beltline, while eastbound traffic was backed up beyond Gorman Street.
