Johnston relaxes water restrictions

Watering restrictions have relaxed a little in Johnston County.

Commissioners voted Monday to allow the county's water customers to use hand-held watering devices anytime. Previously, hand watering was only allowed on weekends.

The revised rules, which went into effect immediately, will also allow water customers to use drip irrigation and soaker hoses for shrubbery and other plants.

"The board felt there needed to be some flexibility," County Manager Rick Hester said.

But the restrictions are subject to change based on monthly reports on flow in the Neuse River, Hester said.

Commissioners will review the policy monthly at their regular 10 a.m. board meeting, usually held the first Monday of each month.
