Eleanor Kinnaird: UNC deflection

Thank you for the Aug. 7 editorial “ Paper chase” on the overreaction to the discovery of minor plagiarism in Mary Willingham’s master’s thesis that was most likely sloppiness. It was not only Willingham’s sloppiness but also her adviser’s.

Master’s theses are reviewed carefully by an adviser and submitted to a committee for approval. Certainly, Willingham should have been more careful, but the substance was not compromised, and this is one more attempt to distract from the real problem with athletics at UNC.

The university could have spared itself much grief, embarrassment, expense and extensive news coverage if it had just thanked Willingham and said it was concerned and would deal with the situation immediately.

Eleanor Kinnaird, Chapel Hill
