The Wake County school board and administration need to be creative. The long summer break should be eliminated. Consensus is that children do better with shorter breaks. Why not simply change all traditional calendars, including high schools, to the year-round calendar? Some schools would simply operate on a single track. School capacity could be managed by adding or removing tracks. High schools could be put on multiple tracks.
The reasons against are usually athletic team schedules and subjects with a small number of students such as foreign languages. Football players already attend practices when school is not in session. Students could participate in sports when tracked out. Teachers could move among high schools to cover lightly attended classes.
In time year-round will replace traditional. The historic reasons for the traditional calendar no longer apply. It is clear that the constant changes are made from a top-down view with little consideration of student stability.
