I am a 32-year veteran of the classroom, and it saddens me that I am going to have to retire for financial reasons. The state of North Carolina counts the last four years of service to calculate our retirement pay. At the end of this year, my salary will be my highest and will only go down next year with the new salary scale.
This is so sad. I love being with kids, and I hate that my retirement decision is being made for monetary reasons, not because I really want to.
The State of North Carolina needs to really stop and think what it wants for its youth. I want to believe that I foster lifelong learning in my classroom. I also hope that over the last 32 years I have been a great role model for our youth.
North Carolina needs to value its veteran teachers and make it financially possible for our educators to stay in the classroom and do what they do best!
