Marilyn Slate: A time to change

Regarding the Sept. 30 Parents Talk Back column “ ‘I hope I said enough to save his life’ ”: I’m an older, white woman, raised in the North. This article brought tears to my eyes.

I have made several black women friends since moving to the South many years ago. I raised four boys, and I never had to have this talk with them! I hate that everything is black and white!

I know these friends of mine must have spent many hours worrying every time their boys left the house. That’s a shame. When are we going to look at people as people and judge them by what they do, not what color they are?
