Robert Cole: Broader problems

Regarding the Oct. 23 news article “ Fake-class scheme aided UNC players’ eligibility”: The Wainstein report was a blatant attempt to throw the UNC Department of African and African-American Studies under the bus. The investigation was limited to that department, but a student cannot stay academically eligible taking classes in just one department.

These student-athletes, reputedly some of whom had a fourth-grade reading ability and should never have been admitted in the first place, had to have had passing grades in classes offered in other departments.

No one at UNC seems interested in finding out how this phenomenon occurred or which departments, faculty or athletic advisers facilitated it. This is a shameless lack of curiosity, hypocrisy and bigotry.
