It was amusing to recognize a description of my car in the Nov. 18 letter “ Disappointing discourse.” I did indeed have pretty nearly every GOP candidate’s bumper sticker on my back window. Perhaps that is what led the letter-writer to believe I am so far to the right that I believe everyone to the left is wrong. In fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth!
My bumper sticker reads “Not right or left, right or wrong.” What I was trying to say was that issues should not be evaluated by what side each party takes, but rather on the rightness or wrongness of the issue.
For example, many of my party are very anti-gay marriage. Though happily heterosexual, I am a huge supporter of gay marriage. Everyone has just as much right to be married as do I, and it is wrong to prevent that. You see ... not right or left, but right or wrong.
How the writer tied my bumper sticker to anything else in The N&O is a mystery. I’ve learned that while there are huge differences among parties, as often as not there are also huge areas where we agree. My hope is that we each try to bridge our differences so we can work together to help North Carolina and our country.
