Harriet Solomon: Liberal arts leaders

Regarding the Nov. 12 Point of View “ What athletic scandal?”: As a linguist (Romance and Slavic languages) and a musician, I take offense at Michael Jacobs’ implication that people in these fields are not as capable in leadership roles (former UNC Chancellor James Moeser) than those in more business-oriented fields (Provost James Dean) in dealing with the complexities of the UNC academic-athletic scandal.

May I remind everyone that our one and only MBA president led us down the primrose path to a failed war in Iraq and into the worst recession since 1929, and that an actor president is revered by the very people who want leaders to come from nonhumanities fields?
