Regarding the Dec. 4 news article “ State steers curriculum”: Conservatives now want to change how our history is taught. They want no more negative information taught like slavery, Japanese-American internment or child labor where 13-years-olds like my father were forced to work in coal mines. Why pay a dollar for a man when you can buy a kid for a dime? was a common refrain.
Conservatives also proclaim they are against teaching about war. Wait until their agenda is accepted. Suddenly, some wars will be acceptable. One by one, the wars will be reintroduced and anyone objecting will be branded as un-American. And that is the purpose of their change. Set up America as good and pure, and any contrary comments from teachers or students will be labeled un-American. Students will be taught that any compromise is treason.
Conservatives want the classroom to be as divided as our communities are now divided. If we are not with them, we are against them, is their divisive cry. And they call themselves patriots.
