Regarding the Dec. 3 news article “Raleigh City Council draws debate lines on Airbnb rentals”: Getting an intimate, personal introduction to an unknown city is the unique gift of Airbnb.
Our family has had countless unforgettable stays in cities where the homeowners showed us where the local farmer’s market was, where to shop for bread, where to get the best coffee, the location of their favorite watering hole.
We stayed in historic homes the owner clearly loved, where he/she had lived as a child, homes that put us in the heart of the city.
We need more choice than the typical chain hotel. I support the bottom-up, grassroots rise of Airbnb. It’s a win-win, providing much needed extra income for the homeowner, and for the visitor, offering affordable, intimate experiences of cities, their neighborhoods and the people who inhabit them.
