In a Dec. 7 letter “ Understandable silence” the writer blamed President Obama for the number of the working-age population not in the labor force.
He ignores the more than 14 million people who are not in the labor force because they are disabled – those who have retired for health reasons, those who cannot work because they have severe asthma, heart conditions, cancer, mental illness, etc. Also not included are those who have never worked because they have autism or other severe developmental disabilities. This number has increased substantially and consistently since 1998.
If the increase in autism is any indication, the number of working-age population not in the labor force will only continue to increase.
Placing the blame for this on President Obama is facile but lacks any basis in fact.
