Regarding the Dec. 19 news article “ ECU eyes racially sensitive renaming”: East Carolina University should not be debating changing the name of the Charles B. Aycock Hall because it ostensibly offends some people.
If we proceed along this path, I can see at some point in the future where some folks might be offended by some of Martin Luther King’s activities, leading to a demand that his name be removed from history. I think we should respect what individuals did to achieve recognition during their lives.
This zeal to remove certain names from history should be applied equally. Watch out FDR, JFK, LBJ. There are people offended by having the names of purported adulterers and closet racists on public buildings.
