Regarding the Feb. 5 People item “ Brian Williams apologizes for false Iraq story”: I am a Vietnam veteran, and I find it impossible to believe that Brian Williams “misremembered” an incident in which he described being on a helicopter that was hit by an RPG.
My service in Vietnam was approximately 45 years ago, and I can remember vividly any time I was in danger. I was assigned to an Army base alongside the Bien Hoa airbase and also at Camp Eagle near Hue. Coincidentally, all my time was spent with the 101st Airborne Division, the same unit that was in the helicopter brought down in the Williams story.
I was fortunate never to have been “out in the boonies” but still experienced a number of times where there were life and death situations such as mortar and rocket attacks.
I have not in the past and never will in the future embellish stories of my time in this country. Williams should be ashamed of himself, and NBC should fire him immediately.
