Regarding your Feb 16 editorial “ Bad form”: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to Congress on March 3 is being dictated by the Obama administration’s desire to wrap up an agreement with Iran by March 26.
Netanyahu and many American Jews see this is a critical issue that poses an existential threat to Israel if Iran is allowed to produce a nuclear bomb. Coming after the deadline date could be too late to influence the negotiations.
As negotiations with Iran continue, there is growing concern that if the contemplated deal is reached, Iran will be allowed to continue its nuclear program with only temporary and unverifiable restrictions. Iran will become a threshold nuclear arms state and a danger to its neighbors and America.
The administration was notified of the speech before it was made public and decided to make it a personal issue. The “protocol” argument is bogus.
To say that Netanyahu is coming to Washington for internal political reasons is misleading. There are very few Israelis who have not already made up their mind about the upcoming elections, and the visit is probably going to hurt him domestically more than help him.
