In regards to the June 2 letter “Clinton’s culture”: I read the transcript of Hillary Clinton’s speech from the Women in the World Summit, and she never said that “deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases” had to be changed in the United States.
Reading the speech, in the vast majority of it Clinton is seeking change, but in countries where women are brutally oppressed. She spoke of the need for change in countries where 6-year-olds are sold into marriage to repay a debt, where a 14-year-old is brutally attacked and nearly killed for trying to go to school, or where a woman is gang-raped to death.
It would take a wild leap to read this speech as one requiring men in the United States to change their religious beliefs, and as a man with a wife and two daughters, I encourage everyone to read it. She celebrates how far women in America have come, encourages them to strive for more and laments the horrors women in less civilized countries continue to endure.
