Regarding the May 13 news article “Pope: Let’s study whether women can be deacons”: I suppose I should have jumped for joy at the pope’s decision to “study whether” women are fit to assume leadership roles in his church. Instead, I was both angry and sad.
I am a woman. I have a brain, a heart and a soul. I am not quite sure what I am lacking that has prevented me from equal rights all these years.
It’s the 21st century, and women are still fighting for equal pay, for a picture on a piece of paper money, a holiday (how about a highway?) named after one of us and equal opportunities in general.
It is sad that we need to “study whether” our fellow humans – different only in the packaging, not the contents – can serve the Lord, or each other, or humanity. We tout so much about this country and the opportunities here, but we still have far to go.
