Regarding the June 14 letter “Saying the words”: The writer complains that the cause of the Orlando massacre is not gun access but Islamic radicalism. If that’s true, he needs to explain what connection Islamic radicalism had to the Sandy Hook, the Aurora, the Charleston, the Umpqua, the Virginia Tech and other massacres in recent history.
The AR-15 was the automatic assault weapon used in the Orlando, Sandy Hook, Aurora and San Bernardino massacres – the weapon is the common denominator, not Islamic radicalism.
The writer also points to a recent incident in Israel to imply that a lower body count is possible if “good guys” are weaponized. But the assailants’ illegally obtained automatic weapons failed to function properly – hence, the low number of casualties.
Israel bans ownership of automatic weapons. To own a pistol in Israel, a citizen must apply for a license, show a need and pass a mental health check. The applicant also has to have been a resident more than tjree years and either 21 (if ex-military) or 27 years old. Even with a permit, the amount of ammunition is strictly limited.
In Israel, there is no right to own a gun, automatic weapons are banned and ammunition is restricted. Maybe the writer would feel safer there without the Second Amendment.
