After reading the May 25 David Brooks column “The paradox of her unpopularity” on Hillary Clinton’s unacceptability as a candidate, I came to the conclusion that the issue is not the things he listed but rather the fact that she is a woman and therefore not a good candidate. All the things he listed would be admired in a male candidate but are taboo for women.
For my part, I say good for her! Clinton fought the status quo. She excelled, and she deserves to run. We need a woman president. Does she come with baggage? Yes. However, every candidate who tried for the nomination did as well.
However, her baggage is scrutinized more because she is a woman. Look to the email debacle: Colin Powell did the same, as did Bush and Cheney, but no one went after them. They say that’s because Powell is not running, and all of them are out of office. Really?
We are all flawed, but we need to realize that women are equal to men and deserve a chance to show it.
