News item: Republicans in the 2nd District congressional race in North Carolina are engaged in a titanic struggle to prove which of them is the ... uh, purest conservative of them all. “All” means incumbent Renee Ellmers of Dunn, challenger George Holding of Raleigh (who is switching from the 13th, where he’s the incumbent) and Greg Brannon, a Cary doctor.
We in the conservative movement have been to a point perplexed by the infighting among these three candidates.
Consider: Holding and his allies are declaring that Ellmers, of Dunn, is not a true conservative. For evidence, they point to her cooperation with former House Speaker John Boehner, who included her in his extended leadership team. Frankly, the charge is effective for those of us in the most conservative wing of this movement.
Boehner, after all, was the Republican speaker who opposed President Obama at every turn, but in the end refused to go along with the tea partyers who wanted to shut down the U.S. government by not raising the debt ceiling and therefore could have crashed the stock market and put the economy into a recession. The man, Boehner, was clearly a wild-eyed left-winger, and Ellmers seemed to have been in there with him all the time.

Now Ellmers, for her part — albeit even with her liberal tendencies — has scored with claims that Holding hasn’t been a ball of fire when it comes to introducing legislation or getting much done. He says he’s working behind the scenes. But where is his legislation to dismantle Social Security and Medicare and other government programs? Could it be that Holding is working “behind the scenes” to do liberal deals with that Nancy Pelosi person of California? Is Holding, whom Ellmers claims has a taste for fancy travel at the taxpayers’ expense, acting more like those Democrat high rollers he has long claimed to despise?
After Holding’s 13th District was moved west by the bumblers on Jones Street who had to redraw congressional districts a few hundred times, he just decided to run against Ellmers in the 2nd, though she’s a fellow Republican. But — in a point clear to those of us who know a liberal conspiracy when we see one (and we see ’em everywhere, baby) it happens that Holding lives in the 4th District, which is represented by liberal Democrat David Price. Hmmmm ... he challenges a conservative fellow Republican, but leaves a liberal Democrat alone.
Well, well, well.
It also should be noted that in their multiple terms in Congress, neither Ellmers nor Holding has instituted a single impeachment proceeding against President Obama. Interesting.
So, friends, it’s clear both the incumbents have less-than-perfect qualifications for those of us, true conservatives, who want our candidates to be undiluted, to stand on the very tip of the right wing.
So what, then, about Brannon? Well, he’s a tea partyer, so that’s good. But he’s not well defined yet, and that’s a problem. His conservative credentials seem strong, but he does seem to have a hankering to be part of big government. And we’d still like to hear details about his plan to impeach President Hillary Clinton. And ... well, Holding and Ellmers once claimed to be conservatives, too.
My fellow conservatives, I know you look to this space for advice on adhering to the principles of Herbert Hoover and other great leaders, but for now we are stumped. It appears, in the 2nd District, we may have a contest not to determine who is the purest conservative, but who is a conservative at all.
We are sticklers for tried and true conservatives. We give you, for example, our support for Donald Trump.
