College Notebook: UNC chalks up 2nd consecutive shutout in field hockey

Junior Nina Notman had two goals and an assist and top-ranked North Carolina earned its second consecutive shutout in field hockey, beating Liberty 4-0 Sunday.

The Tar Heels (13-2) finished with 11 shots to five by Liberty (9-7). The Tar Heels had nine penalty corners and the Flames drew four.

Duke: Freshman forward Ashley Kristen knocked in a cross from Jessica Buttinger with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to give the eighth-ranked Blue Devils (11-4) a 3-2 victory over visiting James Madison.

Women’s Soccer

N.C. State: A 96th-minute header by Hayley Dowd gave host Boston College a 1-0 ACC victory against the Wolfpack, spoiling a 13-save effort by N.C. State sophomore Mackenzie Stelljes.


North Carolina: Chaniel Nelson had 13 kills, six blocks, and five digs to help the Tar Heels win at Duke 25-23, 26-24, 25-20.

N.C. State: The host Wolfpack dropped a tough 18-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-14, 15-9) ACC decision to Louisville.


North Carolina: Caroline Price earned two straight-set victories to earn a spot in Monday’s main draw final of the USTA/ITA Carolinas Regional against Clemson’s Joana Eidukonyte. In doubles, Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle upset the top seeds from Duke, Ester Goldfeld and Alyssa Smith, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (7).

N.C. State: The team of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster advanced to the doubles final at the USTA/ITA championships with two victories at Cary Tennis Park.
