Fever Coach Stephanie White Admits 1 Regret From Playing Days: 'I'm Too Old Now'
Stephanie White continues to enjoy a successful coaching career following her WNBA playing days. However, she admitted that she would have loved to earn more money as a player.
During her pregame availability on Thursday, the Indiana Fever head coach shared her thoughts on NIL money and the prize pot for the Commissioner's Cup. She acknowledged that the game is more lucrative now and that she often thinks about what she could have earned if she played in this era.
"Yeah, I often wonder how far back we can go to get some money," White admitted. That would have been nice. I'm too old now, I guess."
White starred as a high school basketball player for Seeger High in Lebanon, Indiana. She brought her talents to the Purdue Boilermakers and spent her entire collegiate career with the program. The shooting guard won the national championship, Big Ten Most Outstanding Player and Consensus All-American honors in her senior season in 1999.
The Charlotte Sting drafted her at No. 21 in the second round, and she played her rookie season with the franchise. The Miami Sol selected White in the expansion draft the following year, before trading her to the Fever. She suited up for Indiana until 2004 and announced her retirement after the campaign.
White transitioned to coaching by taking assistant coaching jobs at Ball, Kansas State and Toledo. She then became an assistant coach for the Chicago Sky and the Fever. In 2015, she landed her first WNBA head coaching gig with Indiana. She returned to the team in 2024.
White was named the WNBA Coach of the Year in 2023, while she was with the COnnecticut Sun. She has established herself as one of the most respected coaches in the league. White aims to bring a championship to Indiana this season with her Caitlin Clark-led squad.
