How the Shortened Belmont Stakes Distance Changes the Race
The Belmont Stakes is being held at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, for the third straight year instead of its traditional home at Belmont Park, which is undergoing its first major renovation since 1968. The most immediate difference between the two venues is the race distance.
At Belmont Park, the race was contested at 1 1/2 miles due to the track's unique configuration. At Saratoga Race Course, however, the distance has been shortened to 1 1/4 miles. While that distance is not frequently used at Saratoga, the change significantly alters race dynamics.
Traditionally, Post No. 1 has been the most successful starting position in Belmont Stakes history, producing 24 winners. Post No. 3 ranks second with 16 winners, while Posts No. 2 and No. 7 have each produced 14 winners.
However, the two editions held at Saratoga have offered a limited but different sample. Dornoch won the 2024 Belmont Stakes from Post No. 6, while Sovereignty captured last year's race from Post No. 2.
While two races are far too small a sample to draw definitive conclusions, the venue change has clearly shifted the Belmont Stakes from a test of stamina to a test of speed management because of the shorter distance.
According to an analysis by Noel Michaels of America's Best Racing, there have been 39 dirt races run over 1 1/4 miles at Saratoga Race Course since 2000, and the results strongly favor stalkers, while closers are, in his words, "an awful bet at the distance."
"Stalkers won 49% of the races (19 wins)," Michaels wrote. "Speed horses racing on or close to the pace within a length of the lead have done well, too. They've won 15 of the 39 races to account for 38%."
Post position has also proven important for speed horses, with the majority of winners coming from Posts No. 1 through No. 3. Those positions belong to Vitruvian Man, Powershift, and Chief Wallabee in the 2026 Belmont Stakes. However, post position appears to have less impact on stalkers and closers.
"Looking at the 1 ¼-mile post position stats, 20 of the last 39 races at the distance (51%) have been won by horses breaking from the three inside posts. Winners from posts 1-3 have far outperformed winners from the middle posts 4-6 (13 wins, 33% of the races) and outside posts 7+ (6 wins, 15%)," Michaels added.
Renegade enters as the odds-on favorite at 2-1, followed by Chief Wallabee at 3-1, while Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo is listed at 9-2. Based on these historical trends, Chief Wallabee may be the most appealing of the three because of his running style and favorable post position. Golden Tempo and Renegade's profiles appear less suited to the shorter distance, and their post positions offer little additional advantage.
Powershift, breaking from Post No. 2 at 12-1 odds, could emerge as an upset candidate. Commandment, listed at 6-1, also appears well suited to the shortened 1 1/4-mile distance.
