Wanda Watkins, Campbell’s longtime women’s basketball coach, stepping down

Campbell women’s basketball coach Wanda Watkins is stepping down after 35 seasons to take an administrative role at the school, according to a press release.

Watkins, who started coaching at Campbell in 1981, has 549 wins, making her the 29th winningest active Division I women’s coach.

The coach led the Camels to conference titles in the Big South in 1989 and in the Atlantic Sun in 2000, when Campbell beat Georgia Southern to earn its first NCAA tournament bid.

In her new position, Watkins will serve as a liaison for the office of the athletic director and the university president for special projects, along with mentoring other Campbell coaches, according to the release.
