E.J. Montgomery, a Class of 2018 five-star power forward from Marietta, Ga., is making the most of his trip to the Triangle this week.
Montgomery (6-10, 200 pounds) was in Chapel Hill Monday to watch the Tar Heels defeat Notre Dame, 83-69, and will be in Durham on Wednesday when the Blue Devils host Virginia Tech.
Last month, Montgomery, the top ranked player in Georgia according to 247Sports, released his list of his top 11 schools: Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, USC, Clemson, Georgia and UCLA.
If the Blue Devils land Montgomery, that would give Duke five of the top 12 Class of 2018 players in the country – all five-star players. Montgomery would join R.J. Barrett (No. 1), Cam Reddish (No. 2), Zion Williamson (No. 3) and Tre Jones (No. 8), improving the Blue Devils’ already stacked class.
If Montgomery ends up at UNC, he’d join Nassir Little (No. 6), Coby White (No. 23) and Rechon Black (No. 62).
Montgomery is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation in 247Sports composite rankings. Montgomery was selected to play in the 2018 McDonald’s All-American game March 28 in Atlanta, Ga.
Montgomery is on the East roster along with Barrett, Williamson and White. Little, Reddish and Jones are on the West roster.
Montgomery, a senior at Wheeler High School, originally committed to Auburn in 2016, but when it was announced that assistant coach Chuck Person was part of the FBI’s investigation into college basketball, Montgomery backed off the commitment.
Montgomery is averaging 26 points and 14 rebounds a game this season.
