The only lowlight from N.C. State’s upset of then-No. 2 Duke on Jan. 11 was when freshman Caleb Martin checked into the game and realized he had forgotten to put his game jersey on underneath his warmup jacket.
Martin ended up in coach Mark Gottfried’s doghouse because of the mental error, playing only 2 minutes in the 87-75 win over the Blue Devils and 8 minutes against North Carolina this past Wednesday.
But Martin got back into the rotation in Saturday’s 72-63 win at Florida State. He scored eight points and had three rebounds and two assist in 27 minutes.
With guard Cat Barber sitting out the game because of the death of a family member, Martin and his twin brother Cody were both needed to topple the Seminoles.
When Gottfried has needed a spark, particularly on defense, he has used the Martins together. Caleb Martin had played more earlier in the season but Cody Martin has gotten more minutes lately. Cody Martin got his first start against FSU.
Cody Martin’s minutes have spiked since the Cincinnati loss on Dec. 30. With Gottfried wanted more energy on defense, Cody Martin emerged in practice as one of the hardest workers.
He has averaged 13.4 minutes per game over the past five games, after not getting off the bench in four of the previous five games.
