Former N.C. State guard Dennis Smith Jr. happily fed his Dallas Mavericks teammates food from Charlotte-based Bojangles’ when the NBA team visited his home state to play the Hornets last month.
Smith’s former teammate, current N.C. State guard Markell Johnson, would prefer another fast-food chicken choice.
Johnson drew social media attention Thursday night when he tweeted that he prefers Popeyes to Bojangles’, saying the Georgia-based chain’s Louisiana-inspired cuisine is “way better.”
On Friday, the sophomore guard elaborated.
“I’m going to drive right past Bojangles’ and go to Popeyes every time,” Johnson said. “That’s a no-brainer.”
Johnson said the new Popeyes that opened near N.C. State’s campus on Western Boulevard is “lit” and that his favorite meal is a platter with spicy chicken tenders and sweet cajun fries with sweet heat and ranch sauces.
“That’s my go-to,” Johnson said.
As for any blowback he might get for liking Popeyes over the local chain, Johnson pointed out that he’s from Cleveland where he grew up eating Popeyes because there weren’t any Bojangles’ restaurants. While he ate Bojangles’ last year as a freshman, he’s returned to his roots since Popeyes opened near campus last fall.
