CBS’s quirky crime procedural “Elsbeth” has had episodes with plots ripped from the headlines before, but Thursday’s episode was a clear reference to the relationship between UNC head football coach Bill Belichick and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.

The episode that aired Thursday, Dec. 4, titled “Basket Case,” centers around the murder of the athletic director of a fictional New York university. A primary suspect? The 22-year-old girlfriend (Peyton, played by Lana Condor) of the much older basketball coach (Russ, or Coach W, played by Sam McMurray). The character’s reputation for inserting herself in her boyfriend’s career has made headlines on podcasts and, on the show, has gotten her banned from the athletic facilities.

It’s up to lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni (played by Carrie Preston) to help New York police solve the murder. The similarities to Belichick, 73, and Hudson, 24, are woven throughout the episode.

Belichick entered his first year as the Tar Heels coach with much fanfare. North Carolina ended with a 4-8 record and 2-6 in ACC play. North Carolina has fallen short of bowl eligibility for the first time since 2018, The N&O reported.

Here’s a mostly spoiler-free breakdown of the parallels. As of Friday afternoon, neither Belichick or Hudson have publicly commented on the episode.

Offering advice to the team

Belichick has addressed speculation that Hudson was making decisions regarding his professional engagements and coaching schedule at UNC-Chapel Hill.

“Elsbeth” touched on that when Peyton offered suggestions to members of the basketball team, including secret recruiting help, social media advice and even weighing in on their plays.

In a June news conference, Belichick told the media that Hudson “doesn’t have any role in the UNC football program,” The News & Observer reported. The university said at the end of April she is not employed by the university. She is also not a contracted vendor.

“But, again, there has been noise out there about a lot of different things,” Belichick said, according to The N&O.

Belichick’s relationship with Hudson drew attention after emails from the university included a request from Belichick for staff to copy her on all correspondence to him, The News & Observer reported. The emails also showed Hudson instructing UNC staff on how it should handle announcements regarding assistant coaching hires — Belichick hired both of his sons — and any negative social media comments.

The podcast connection

In the CBS series, Peyton and the coach are seen listening to various sports podcasts that addressed their high-profile romance.

Belichick and Hudson have had a similar impact on the podcast world, with a multitude of hosts using them as the basis of their episodes in the year since they took their romance public.

Their social media activity

After making their relationship public, Belichick and Hudson shared photos on social media that included a glimpse of them on a beach.

Before the fictional athletic director’s death on “Elsbeth,” he berated Peyton for making Russ look like a joke with their “selfies and sandwich ads.”

Getting banned

“Elsbeth” heightened the tension — and hinted that Peyton could be the killer — by having the athletic director ban her from Russ’ workplace shortly before his death.

Earlier this year, UNC denied a report that Hudson had been “banned” from the team’s football facilities, The N&O reported.

“While Jordon Hudson is not an employee at the University or Carolina athletics, she is welcome to the Carolina football facilities,” the statement read. “Jordon will continue to manage all activities related to coach Belichick’s personal brand outside of his responsibilities for Carolina football and the university.”

Silencing critics

On “Elsbeth,” a fan of the coach says, “It is not his record [that is the problem]. It is the way he is letting this woman embarrass him. He looks ridiculous,” adding that he “should have stayed retired” if he was exploring a romance with a much-younger woman.

On the show, the Peyton character responds to the critics of her personal life: “People act like it is the age difference between me and Russ, but really I just think they are miserable lonely losers who hate to see people who are actually happy.”

In real life, Hudson and Belichick have waved away comments about their relationship. In May, Belichick told Michael Strahan on “Good Morning America” that Hudson “does the business things that don’t relate to North Carolina that come up in my life, so I can concentrate on football.”

Belichick was also asked if he had known there would be so much interest in his personal life, would he have returned to college coaching or if that has taken away from the experience. He did not directly address the question and said the coaching staff is focused on the team.

“That’s my job. That’s our staff’s job; to put a good plan in place so if they do the work that they see the improvement,” Belichick said.

Their relationship status

Spoiler alert: On “Elsbeth,” after Peyton realized her partner could be the killer, she convinced him to get married as a way to protect herself from having to possibly testify against him.

Belichick and Hudson are not publicly known to be engaged.
