North Carolina will begin the season ranked No. 23 in the Associated Press top 25 poll, which released its preseason rankings on Sunday. The Tar Heels were also ranked No. 23 in the recently-released coaches poll.
This is the first time since 2010 that UNC will enter the season ranked. Given the Tar Heels play Liberty and San Diego State, and then have a bye week, it also means they should be ranked headed into a game at East Carolina on Sept. 20.
Win that one, and it could set up a matchup of top-20 teams when the Tar Heels travel to Clemson for a game on Sept. 27.
