Larry Fedora said it was a game time decision to start Marquise Williams at quarterback in place of the injured Bryn Renner at Virginia Tech. This week there is less drama. Fedora said on Monday that Renner, who missed the Virginia Tech game with a foot injury, will start on Thursday night against Miami.
“Definitely,” Fedora said when asked whether Renner, the fifth-year senior, would start.
Renner, who suffered a left foot injury during UNC’s loss against ECU, watched from the sideline while the Tar Heels suffered a 27-17 loss at Virginia Tech on Oct. 5. In relief of Renner, Williams played well in stretches. He completed 23 of his 35 attempts for 277 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran for 56 yards.
Williams gave the UNC offense a different dimension with his running ability, and both Fedora and offensive coordinator Blake Anderson said Williams could play a larger role in the offense the rest of the season. Renner, though, remains the team’s starting quarterback.

Renner said on Monday that he has worked with the first team offense since last Tuesday. He was close, he said, to being able to play against Virginia Tech. An inability to plant his foot kept him out of the game, but he said on Monday that his foot “feels great” and that he’ll “be ready” on Thursday.
