Saint Augustine’s Carlton Butts was named linebacker of the week and Claytin Lewis was selected football rookie of the week by the CIAA on Tuesday.
Butts recorded 12 tackles including two tackles for loss, one sack and one forced fumble, which the Falcons recovered in a 33-31 CIAA victory over Chowan this past Saturday. Lewis caught six passes for a season-high 216 yards and two touchdowns including the game-winning 66-yard reception with 2:36 left against Chowan. The speedy freshman was seven yards shy of breaking the school’s single-game record for receiving yards.
Duke: The Blue Devils’ 19th-ranked doubles pair of senior Ester Goldfeld and sophomore Alyssa Smith represented Duke in the doubles qualifying draw of the 2014 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships Tuesday in Pacific Palisades, Calif., playing alongside one another for the first time this fall.
In the opening round match, Goldfeld and Smith fell to San Jose State’s team of Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey, 7-5, 6-2. With the loss, the Duke duo now owns a career record of 11-9, including an 0-1 mark in fall play.
N.C. State: The Wolfpack garnered one of the program’s highest preseason rankings when the rifle team was listed at No. 13 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association preseason poll.
The Pack finished the 2013-14 season ranked 15th in the final CRCA poll, after starting the year with a preseason ranking of No. 16.
