Shaw’s Richardson, St. Aug’s McCombs on All-CIAA preseason teams

Shaw University's Larry Richardson was named to the Preseason All-CIAA team, announced Thursday at the annual CIAA Basketball Media Day in Charlotte.

Richardson, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard from Garner, averaged 10.8 points per game last season for the Bears, and was named the CIAA Rookie of the Week twice during the 2013-2014 season.

The Bears were picked to finish fifth in the CIAA's Southern Division by the CIAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association.

CIAA women’s basketball

Saint Augustine’s: Junior guard Regime McCombs was selected to the Preseason All-CIAA Women’s Basketball Team.

The Lady Falcons are picked to finish fifth in the women’s Southern Division.

The 2013 CIAA Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year, McCombs has led the Lady Falcons in scoring the last two seasons including a 12.7 points per game average as a sophomore.


N.C. State: Returning NCAA Division I heavyweight champion Nick Gwiazdowski will take on three-time All-American Mike McMullan of Northwestern at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Nov. 1 at the Palestra on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

The two have split matches against one another during their collegiate careers.

Men’s golf

North Carolina: The Tar Heels’ William Register and Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans have been selected ACC co-Golfers of the Month.

Register, a freshman from Burlington, got his Tar Heel career off to a fast start with three top-20 finishes in his first three collegiate tournaments, including a record-breaking win at the Primland Collegiate Invitational..

For the month, Schniederjans posted a stroke average of 68.67 with five of six rounds at or below par.
