Men’s Basketball Region Roundup

Andre Smith scored 23 points and Keon Moore pumped in 18 more while grabbing nine rebounds to lead Winthrop to a 71-63 comeback win over Campbell on Saturday.

Smith shot 8 of 13 from the floor and sank all six of his free throws, while Moore was 4 of 11 from 3-point range. Keon Johnson added 10 points to help Winthrop (10-9, 5-3 Big South) clinch the program’s 600th win.

Trailing most of the game, Winthrop took the lead midway through the second half during a 14-4 run capped by Smith’s back-to-back buckets to make it 50-44 with 11:27 remaining.

Campbell (7-14, 1-7) led by as many as 10 in the first half but couldn’t stop Winthrop’s second-half surge.

Reco McCarter (Wayne Country Day) and Andrew Ryan led Campbell with 14 points apiece.

Coastal Carolina 63, Presbyterian 52: Josh Cameron scored 16, and Badou Diagne had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the host Chanticleers (15-5, 6-2 Big South).

Presbyterian is 7-14, 3-5.

Charleston Southern 93, Gardner-Webb 80: Saah Nimley hit seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 37 points – his fourth straight 30-plus point game – for host Charleston Southern (12-7, 6-2).

Nimley, Arlon Harper and Will Saunders hit all 15 of Charleston Southern’s 3-pointers and combined for 74 points.

Tyrell Nelson (Metrolina Christian) and Adonis Burbage scored 19 apiece for Gardner-Webb (13-8, 5-3).

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Tulsa 66, East Carolina 64: James Woodard scored 17 points and added five rebounds to lead the visiting Golden Hurricane (14-5, 7-0) who have won nine straight. Terry Whisnant (Cherryville) had 22 points to lead the Pirates (8-11, 1-5).

COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

Drexel 53, College of Charleston 51: Damion Lee scored 21 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 17.1 seconds left, and the host Dragons (6-15, 3-5) held College of Charleston (6-15, 1-7) scoreless for the final three minutes.

MEAC

N.C. Central 79, Coppin St. 77: Jordan Parks scored 25 points, including the go-ahead putback, and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead N.C. Central (15-5, 7-0) to its 30th straight home victory.

The Eagles shot 10 of 20 from 3-point range.

Delaware State 67, N.C. A&T 52: Amere May scored 21 points to lead visiting Delaware State (10-9, 4-1). Ahmad Abdullah (Knightdale) tallied 17 points and six rebounds for N.C. A&T (5-16, 2-5).

SEC

Arkansas 61, Missouri 60: Alandise Harris scored 14 points while Bobby Portis added 12 and grabbed 10 rebounds for visiting Arkansas (15-4, 4-2).

Missouri (7-12, 1-5) lost its fifth consecutive game.

Texas A&M 67, Tennessee 61: Jalen Jones scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds as visiting Texas A&M (13-5, 4-2) got its fourth straight victory.

Tennessee (12-6, 4-2) had cut a 17-point second-half deficit down to five when Vols guard Kevin Punter (Body of Christ) missed a driving layup attempt with 1:13 remaining.

Georgia 72, Mississippi State 66: J.J. Frazier sank all seven of his 3-pointers and finished with a career high 37 points on 12-for-14 shooting to lead visiting Georgia (13-5, 4-2 SEC).

Mississippi State (9-10, 2-4) was led by a career-day from Roquez Johnson, who had 25 points on 10-for-18 shooting and made it a double-double by adding 11 rebounds.

Mississippi 72, Florida 71: Jarvis Summers scored 16 points, including two free throws with 3.5 seconds remaining for host Mississippi (12-7, 3-3).

Florida (10-9, 3-3) lost despite shooting a blistering 12 of 20 (60 percent) from 3-point range.

Louisiana State 79, Vanderbilt 75 (OT): Tim Quarterman scored six of his 12 points in overtime for visiting LSU (15-4, 4-2). The Commodores (11-8, 1-5) lost their fifth straight.

SOUTH ATLANTIC

Mars Hill 66, Lenoir-Rhyne 56: The host Lions’ Patrick Monroe (Durham) led all scorers with 19 points including 17 after halftime.

Lenoir-Rhyne is 7-9, 5-7.

Brevard 76, Wingate 73: Ryan Daye scored a season-high 26 for the visiting Bulldogs (10-8, 7-5) but the Tornados (8-10, 6-6) closed the game with an 11-4 run.

Lincoln Memorial 86, Catawba 76: The host Railsplitters (18-0, 12-0) stayed undefeated behind 20 points from Luquon Choice and 19 from Lorenza Ross. The Indians are 7-10, 5-7.

SOUTHERN

Furman 82, Allen 46: Stephen Croone scored 20 points, including 3 of 4 3-pointers, Geoff Beans added 12 – all 3s – and Furman rolled over NAIA member Allen University.

The Paladins (6-13) shot 10 of 28 from distance (35.7 percent) and never trailed.

VMI 85, The Citadel 75: Julian Eleby scored 15 points off the bench for host VMI (8-13, 4-6).

Ashton Moore scored 20 to lead The Citadel (8-12, 3-6), which shot just 37.5 percent with 21 turnovers.

SUN BELT

Appalachian State 64, Texas State 58: Frank Eaves (Greensboro Page) scored a career-high 31 points in San Marcos, Texas, as Appalachian State (8-10, 5-4) won its fourth straight Sun Belt Conference game.

Texas State (10-9, 4-6) got 16 points from Emani Gant.
