College Notebook: ACC announces Women’s Basketball Legends

Four former area stars are among 14 players in the 11th annual class of the ACC Women's Basketball Legends, announced Tuesday. Duke’s Alana Beard, North Carolina’s Tracy Reid, N.C. State’s Jennifer Howard Wolgemuth, and Wake Forest’s Janice Collins will be among the players recognized at the 2015 ACC Women's Basketball Tournament March 4-8 in Greensboro.


Duke: Coach David Cutcliffe announced the promotion of Matt Guerrieri to assistant coach. Guerrieri had served as a graduate assistant coach with the Blue Devils for the past three seasons.

Swimming and diving

N.C. State: Sophomore Soren Dahl is ACC Swimmer of the Week after playing a primary part in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams setting Casey Aquatic Center pool records when it hosted Minnesota. Dahl also took first place in the 200 free and 100 butterfly with times of 1:36.99 and 47.37.

Alexia Zevnik, ACC Female Swimmer of the Week, also helped her 200 medley and 400 free relay teams to earn new Casey Aquatic Center records against Minnesota.

She won the 100 and 200 back and 400 IM with times of 53.47, 1:56.21 and 2:02.09, respectively. In the 200 back she set a pool record, finishing more than six seconds ahead of teammate Hannah Freyman who finished second.

UNC: Michole Timm is the ACC Female Diver of the Week after a dominant performance in the first victory against Virginia since the 2007 season. She won the 1-meter and 3-meter events.


N.C. State: The team received 18 votes in the Softball Collegiate Top-25 Preseason Poll. The Wolfpack was just four spots outside of the top 25 at No. 29.


Duke: Nicolas Alvarez earned ACC Tennis Player of the Week. Alvarez, No. 18 in the latest ITA poll, helped Duke to a 3-0 record and a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
