Barton College, located in Wilson, will be playing Division II football, the school announced Tuesday in a press release.
The Barton Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Jan. 27 to approve a football program. When the Bulldogs’ program will start is yet to be determined.
“Football will undoubtedly create a tremendous surge of energy and enthusiasm among students, as well as faculty, staff, alumni, and the Wilson community,” Barton College president Dr. Douglas N. Searcy said in a release.
Barton will create an implementation team, including faculty, staff and student leaders, that will oversee the establishment of the football program. That team will make decisions about the time line, conference affiliation, coaches, schedules, recruiting and more.

The Bulldogs have not played football since the school was named Atlantic Christian College in 1950. The program began in 1920 as the Little Christians and continued until 1930. The program was brought back for five seasons in 1946.
