Nyheim Hines, a rising senior at Garner High, thrilled fans with his electrifying runs and catches last season, rolling up 60 touchdowns for the Trojans during his junior season. He scored 50 rushing touchdowns, caught eight touchdown passes, ran two kicks back for touchdowns and compiled more than 4,000 total yards.
He’s among the most talked about running back recruits in the state, a nationally elite hurdler in track and field and anxious to start the 2014 season.
Hines talked with Garner-Cleveland sports editor D. Clay Best about this year’s Trojan team and Hines’ recruiting plans for the fall.

A: I think we have great potential. We’ve got a lot of talented guys. We’re stronger, faster and we’re looking forward to a great season. We know we’re going to get everybody’s best shot, but when you play for Garner, that’s what happens.
We’re Garner, until somebody takes it from us, it’s ours.
Q: There are several transfers on the team this season. How’s that adjustment been?
A: The transfers are fitting right in. We’ve had a lot of guys come here for various reasons. I’m one of them. (Hines transferred to Garner before his sophomore season from Leesville Road.) Everybody gets a good welcome here. Once you’re here, you’re a Trojan no matter where you came from.
Q: What did you work on during the summer to help you be a better player?
A: I wanted to get faster mainly. That’s why I ran track basically all summer.
Q: How do you have to be a better player on the field this fall?
A: I have to have better ball security. I had two fumbles last year. I lost one, we got the other one back. If you expect to stay on the field, you can’t put the ball on the ground when your team puts it in your hands.”
Q: How’s life on the recruiting trail?
A: I made some unofficial visits this summer to just to see some places. But I will not make a decision until October. I plan to take all five of my official visits – then make the best decision that I can.
