Pinnix leads Northwood to 45-6 win over cedar Ridge

Northwood quarterback Ti Pinnix hadn’t even touched the ball yet, and his team was already up 7-0. When he finally did, the lead only grew.

Pinnix, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior, directed a big-play passing attack to lead the (5-1) Chargers to a 45-6 win against Cedar Ridge (2-4) on Friday night at Charger Stadium. He was 13-for-19 for 231 yards and four touchdowns.

But before he took his first snap Friday, Northwoodhad already scored.

After Cedar Ridge’s first possession stalled, Northwood wide receiver/linebacker Jared Worley fielded a punt three minutes into the first quarter. He cut left, then upfield, exploiting Cedar Ridge’s poor coverage, and raced into the end zone for a 72-yard touchdown and game’s first points.

The student-led crowd chanted his name as he trotted back to his sideline.

Then Pinnix went to work.

After the Chargers forced another punt, he found junior running back Montel Goods for a 5-yard gain. Next he scrambled for 7 yards. Then, on the third play of Northwood’s first drive, Pinnix, popped as he released the ball, bombed a 68-yard touchdown to senior Kadarus Rone. Three plays, all positive and all involving Pinnix, and the Chargers led by two scores with 4:26 left in the quarter.

On the Red Wolves’ next series, they punted, again, and Pinnix made them pay, again. He took the ensuing drive’s first snap and lofted a perfectly weighted pass to senior receiver Jalen Smith, the ball falling into his hands just as he crossed the plane of the end zone. Pinnix through two offensive series: 3-for-3 for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

With just more than six minutes left in the half, Pinnix lobbed an end-zone pass to Rone, who skied over his defender and landed with his second touchdown, this one a 15-yard pass that increased the Chargers’ lead to 31-0 and provided the half’s last points.

It was notable, then, that Pinnix’s best drive was yet to come. On the first play of Northwood’s first series of the second half, the quarterback dumped a 4-yard pass to Rone. Then it was a 5-yarder to Smith and a 24-yard cross to Rone. Next, Rone again, for 20 yards.

Finally, two consecutive passes to Goods, the second a 17-yard touchdown that was Pinnix’s last throw of the game. His numbers on his sole second-half drive: 6-for-7 for 79 yards and a touchdown. Goods later tacked on a 28-yard TD run.

The rain arrived in the fourth quarter with the outcome already determined and the Chargers up 45-0, and many fans filed swiftly filed out before it was over.

Cedar Ridge’s only score came on a 27-yard pass from Peyton Pappas to Christopher McCoy.
