4AA East

(8) Southern Pines Pinecrest (10-2) at (1) Wake Forest (12-0)

Wake Forest’s Bryce Love has 13 touchdowns and averaged 182.7 rushing yards per game in the past three games. Six of Love’s scoring plays during the streak have been of 40 yards or longer. He has rushed for 1,596 yards this season, averaging 11.4 per carry. But the Cougars’ key to advancing probably is defense. Wake Forest has allowed 641 rushing yards this season, 2.0 per rush. Pinecrest junior quarterback Christian Ledbetter has thrown for 1,297 yards and rushed for 1,104. The Patriots average 265 rushing yards per game.

(5) Millbrook (10-2) at (4) Richmond County (11-1)

Millbrook faces a huge challenge against Richmond County, which averages 325 rushing yards per game. The Raiders rebounded from a regular-season-ending 34-13 loss to Scotland by pounding Fuquay-Varina 53-7 last week. Millbrook’s Marcus Marshall averages 152.8 yards rushing. He ran for 350 yards scored five touchdowns last week.

(6) Panther Creek (10-2) at (3) Green Hope (10-2)

Green Hope held Panther Creek to 5 rushing yards on 26 carries and just 148 total yards in the regular-season matchup. The Falcons also stopped Panther Creek inside the 10 with 73 seconds left. Green Hope’s Luke Massei averages 244.7 passing yards. Panther Creek’s Brenden Magner throws for 166 yards per game.

(10) Wakefield (7-5) at (2) Garner (11-1)

Wakefield has allowed an average of 37.8 points in its past nine games. Garner averages 47.8 this year and has topped 40 nine times this season.

(8) Greenville Rose (10-2) at (1) New Bern (12-0)

New Bern beat Rose 33-13 two weeks ago. New Bern has scored 25 points or more in each game since an opening 12-0 victory at Durham Hillside.

(5) Hillside (7-4) at (4) Seventy-First (12-0)

Hillside is a deceptive 7-4. Among the Hornets’ losses were 12-0 to New Bern (which is 12-0), 16-13 to Southern Durham (12-0) and 12-9 to Greensboro Dudley (which was 10-0 before a forfeit that knocked it out of the playoffs.) Hillside beat Fayetteville E.E. Smith in the first round 42-28, and Seventy-First beat Durham Riverside 28-0 in the first round. Paul Underwood has 1,987 rushing yards for Smith.

(6) East Wake (10-2) at (3) Scotland (11-1)

Scotland played for the 2013 4A title in and its loss this season was a 34-28 setback to unbeaten 3A Southern Durham. Quandrin Williams has run for 1,186 yards. East Wake’s offense is lead by Damontay Rhem (1,368 rushing yards) and Tripp Harrington (2,358 yards).

(7) Cape Fear (9-3) at (2) Wilmington Hoggard (11-0)

Hoggard pounded South Central Pitt 49-21 in the first round. Fayetteville Cape Fear advanced with a 32-14 win against Northern Durham.

West: (16) Ragsdale (7-5) at (9) Charlotte Vance (9-3); (13) Mount Tabor (8-4) at (12) Rocky River (8-4); (11) High Point Central (9-3) at (3) Charlotte Catholic (11-1); (7) North Davidson (11-1) at (2) Reagan (11-1)

3AA East

(8) Cleveland (10-2) at (1) Southern Durham (12-0)

Southern Durham has one of the best defenses in the area, allowing 10.2 points a game, so Cleveland’s high-powered offense (48.7 points per game), led by Aaron Farmer (2,855 passing yards) and Corey Brown (1,604 rushing yards), will face a test. Southern Durham has won 25 straight games. Southern Durham quarterback Kendall Hinton has five receivers with more than 400 yards and 20 catches each. Hinton has thrown for 2,705 yards and run for 699.

(12) Chapel Hill (8-3) at (4) Terry Sanford (9-3)

Chapel Hill had little trouble in a 42-14 playoff-opening win at West Brunwick. Connor Stough has thrown for 2,303 yards, with Arkavius Parks grabbing 49 passes for 860 yards. Terry Sanford has won seven straight.

(6) Orange (11-1) at (3) Corinth Holders (9-3)

Senior Grant Cloer directs the Orange offense. He’s a prototypical modern-day quarterback at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds. Michael Bolden, Erik Brandon-Dean and Drew Lemaster lead the backfield and can catch the ball as well. Cloer had long scoring passes to Bryse Wilson and Josh Kiehle in the 21-20 win against Lee County in the first round. Corinth Holders has won nine of its past 10 after an 0-2 start and averages 34.8 points a game.

(7) Northern Guilford (11-1) at (2) Wilson Fike (11-1)

Northern Guilford’s loss was to Eastern Alamance 32-28. Northern Guilford beat Pittsboro Northwood 56-26 in the first round. Fike’s loss was to Southern Nash 42-35. The Demons slipped past rival Wilson Hunt 21-16 in the first round.
